Ofer Golany
Mijn naam is Ofer Golany, een Jood levend in Jeruzalem.
In december 2002, door enkele Duitse muzikanten, op een missie om vrede en verzoening te brengen naar het "Heilige Land", ontmoette ik de "New Life Community" (Nieuw Leven Communiteit) van Nazareth. Twee van hun 7 leden zijn muzikanten: Nabil Abu-Nicola, die zingt, speelt oud, viool (en een massa andere instrumenten) komt van een muzikanten familie en Samia Ashbar die zingt en in voorstellingen darbouka en gitaar speelt. We traden op in Israël (Nazareth, Ramle, Kfar Yasif, Neve Shalom, Jeruzalem enz.).
In mei 2003 namen we een ruwe 7 liedjes CD op bij Sabreen studio´s in Oost-Jerusalem genaamd PEACE FROM JERUSALEM mogelijk gemaakt door de bemiddeling van pater Raed van Taibe. In juli 2003 traden we op in Duitsland als boodschappers van het "Heilige Land" voor toeschouwers voor wie een Christelijke Arabier of een Israëlische pacifist nieuws was (de stereotype brekend dat alle Arabieren Moslims zijn en alle Israëliërs militaristisch). De samenwerking tussen ons, welke voor ons als muzikanten erg natuurlijk is, was voor deze toeschouwers een prestatie van Duitse vredesstichten.

Nabil heeft een CD als zijn verdienste en is bekend in Galilee. Zijn vader treedt uitgebreid op met de oud en zijn broer, Halil, is een succesvol zanger in de Christelijk Arabische commune. Als een vredesactivist (typ Ofer Golany in Google) heb ik gewerkt met verschillende organisaties en initiatieven. Ik geloof dat hoe (en waar) ik leef, boekdelen spreekt over mijn overtuiging om samen te werken (voorbij slechts het (vreedzaam) naast elkaar bestaan) tussen de vele culturen in Israël, speciaal in Jeruzalem.
Sinds afgelopen zomer (2003) waren Nabil en ik in Sarajevo in oktober op uitnodiging van Muzikanten Zonder Grenzen en in december en januari speelden we, als een trio met Samia, in het Franssprekend gedeelte van België, meestal op uitnodiging van kerken. Gedurende deze tijd vergaarden we een repertoire van vredesliederen zo geordend, dat ze Arabisch en Hebreeuws bevatten (we voegden Frans toe aan twee liedjes en de meeste hebben een Engelse versie) welke niet op die eerste CD staan. Ik verbind de tekst zo dat je de essentie van onze boodschap kan lezen. Ze zijn bedoeld om mee te zingen. Dit heeft onze concerten een educatieve belevenis gemaakt als we een projector gebruiken om de tekst te laten zien naar het Engels vertaald. Verder zijn we een levend voorbeeld dat muziek een taal is dat harmonie tussen culturen brengt. We spelen op scholen in Israël en andere locaties om het vreedzaam naast elkaar bestaan te bevorderen.

My name is Ofer Golany, a Jew living in Jerusalem.
In December 2002, through some German musicians on a mission to bring peace and re-conciliation to the "Holy Land", I met the New Life Community of Nazareth. Two of their 7 members are musicians: Nabil Abu-Nicola, who sings, plays oud, violin (and a host of other instruments) comes from a musician's family and Samia Ashkar who sings, and in performance plays darbouka and guitar. We performed in Israel (Nazereth, Ramle, Kfar Yasif, Neve Shalom, Jerusalem etc.).
In May we recorded a sketchy 7 song CD at Sabreen studios in East Jerusalem called PEACE FROM JERUSALEM made possible through the mediation of father Raed from Taibe. In July we performed in Germany as messengers from the "holy land" for audiences for whom a Christian Arab or an Israeli Pacifist were news (breaking the stereotype that all Arabs are Moslem and all Israelis militaristic). The co-operation between us, which to us as musicians is very natural, was for these audiences a feat of German peacemaking.

Nabil has one CD to his credit and is well known in the Galilee. His father performed extensively with the oud and his brother, Halil, is a successful singer in the Christian Arab community. As a peace activist (type Ofer Golany into Google) I have worked with various organizations and initiatives. I believe that how (and where) I live speaks volumes about my commitment to co-operation (beyond just co-existence) between the many cultures in Israel, especially in Jerusalem.
Since last summer Nabil and I were in Sarajevo in October at the invitation of Musicians Without Borders and in December and January we played, as a trio with Samia, in the French-speaking part of Belgium, mostly at the invitation of churches. During this time we amassed a repertoire of peace songs – arranged so that they incorporate both Arabic and Hebrew (we added French on two and most have an English version) which were not on that first CD. I am attaching the texts so that you can read the gist of our message. They are intended to sing along with. This has made our concerts an educational experience as we use a projector to show the texts in transliteration to English font and translated. Beyond that we are a living example that music is a language which brings harmony between cultures.We are performing in Israel at schools and other venues promoting co-existence.
